What do you see in this? Unmistakeably, the large, bulbous white shape is a head, for it has an eye near its leftmost edge. It is connected by the neck of a single thin black line to a pair of shoulders at the bottom of the canvas. There is a bright star on the throat chakra of the body and there are more stars, planets and a comet along the top edge. The retreat of the title seems to be from the body to within the mind. It illustrates an "out-of-body" experience, where the astral body (represented by the blobby head) bobs along on a string above the material world, in the realm of the stars.
