The long and painful separation of representational art from the new media of photography and the cinema included one phase in which artists tried to compete with cinema on its own territory by integrating movement into still images. This painting (though not the puzzle) has an overlay of moving parts, which are the limbs of the Dancer, held to its surface by pins. The owner may thus pose his Dancer in any way suitable to him, whenever he feels like it.
